Greek Steven Eglezos, a 41-year- old Greek football Carlton fan of Glenroy, was watching the Carlton versus Collingwood match in the MCG on Friday night, when he decided to leave earlier with his children .
Unfortunately, as he walked from the Olympic Stand, he confronted a group of six men who were hurling abuse at two elderly ladies, shaking from fear. He wanted to protect them and without a second thought, interfered. The savages attacked him brutally from behind, injuring him extensively. Meanwhile, his children were screaming. His 13-year-old son led his injured father to a nearby ambulance outside the stadium.
Police are investigating the incident and are calling on witnesses to come forward.
“It is unbelievable that this all happened inside the stadium. There was no security around and other supporters were too scared to help,” Mr. Eglezos maintained . He is totally convinced that Friday night matches encourage drinking, which seems to be the cause of the problem.
“It was the first time that something like that had happened to me”, Mr. Eglezos said. He is now being hospitalized and is recovering.
