Australian Public Schools’ Curriculum Include Greek

Greek will be one of the foreign languages taught in mainstream public schools across Australia. It is one of eleven languages the government included in the country’s national curriculum.
Greek language teachers in Australia are celebrating. They describe the Australian government’s definition of Greek as a language from an ethnic language to a heritage language as a great achievement. Other heritage languages include Italian and Vietnamese.
As reported in the Greek-Australian newspaper Neos Kosmos, redefining the Greek language creates new positive conditions to ensure a longterm presence of Greek in Australia’s national curriculum, provided that there is still interest in it.
The Greek language was reportedly included in the curriculum because there are already structures to support its teaching. This offers a low cost to the Australian state.
The most commonly spoken languages in Australia are English, Italian, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, Mandarin and Vietnamese. Foreign languages are taught in both primary and secondary schools. The most popular languages studied at this level are Japanese, Chinese, French, Italian, German, Indonesian, Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic and Latin.
