Commemorative Coins Created for Battle of Marathon’s 2,500 Year Anniversary

The Australian Mint in Perth, Western Australia honored the 2,500 anniversary of the Battle of Marathon by issuing a commemorative coin. Three of these coins are now exhibited permanently in Greece thanks to the Association of Greek-Australian Scientists (Greek Australian Professionals ‘Association – GAPA) and the Association of Greek-Australian Training (Australian Hellenic Educators’ Association – AHEA NSW-ACT-QLD ).

The commemorative coins were given to the Mayor of the Marathon Spyridon Zagkari from the president of the GAPA Katerina Koyva, during his most recent visit to the historic Marathon. As mayor and director of the Museum of Marathon, Zagkaris said the coins will be a part of the Australian exhibition at the museum.

The collection includes the coin of Pheidippides which was produced at the Australian Mint in Perth in 2010, a commemorative coin of 2004 “Sydney-Athens”, produced at the Australian Mint in Canberra, an original photograph of the 1877 Marathon, and photographs of the statue of Spiro Louis in Brighton-Le-Sands.
