Two Greek Australians and a play inspired by a Greek myth were among the winners at the Melbourne Fringe Festival’s Awards Night on Saturday.
Comic writer and performer Vachel Spirason co-wrote and performed in the one man show: “The Hermitude of Angus, Ecstatic”, that was awarded Best Comedy by the festival’s panel of judges.
The show also picked up the Brisbane Powerhouse Comedy Award, which means audiences in Brisbane will get a chance to see the award-winning show in March 2011.
“I’m hoping that these things will help take the show to other places and get people interested,” Spirason said.
“The Hermitude of Angus, Ecstatic” will tour Adelaide and Brisbane early next year before returning to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in April.
“That will be a very busy few months, so I’m going to have to try to get fit,” he claimed.
Basil Hoigis who is the musical director for “Miss Bang: A Series of Seductions in 55 Minutes”, said the Best Cabaret award will come in handy for the show’s return seasons.
“In this business you need a few accolades and a few goings to get people interested,” he said.
In the performance category, The Hayloft Project’s rendition of Thyestes was the joint winner of the Best Performance award, sharing the accolade with Grit Theatre for their show “Us”.
