Cypriot Production in Canberra!

Put on your formal wear and come to see the show that will be presented!  All are welcome to the production with scenes from a traditional Cypriot wedding.  The act will take place on Friday October 1st at 7 p.m. for the Cypriot community.  The scenes will include the preparing of the bridal bed, shaving of the groom, the preparation of the bride, the first dance by the newlywed couple and  traditional folk dances. The Greek dances will include the dance by the best men, the dance will the bride is getting her hair and makeup done, the dowry dance, the man’s dance, the woman’s dance and the couple dances.

The production is edited by folklorist Maro Gemetta with the team from the Folk Group of St. Andrew’s Sansain Community.  The dance groups are directed by dance teacher George Nikias who is of Cypriot descent.  The production will honor the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Cyprus. The formal ceremony was organized by the Cooperation Committee of Organizations of Cyprus to celebrate this occasion.  The history of that day will be conveyed by the High Commissioner of Cyprus in Canberra John James.  The municipalities of  Whitehorse, Franskston and Stonnington will raise the Cyprus flag in their districts.
