Melbourne is ranked 7th Greek- speaking city in the world

Melbourne no longer is the 3rd Greek- speaking city in the world, if ever it was… This is what George Salamouras states, a Greek of the Diaspora, who deals with statistical issues, in response to recent allegations during the celebrations that took place in Melbourne, that the number of Greeks in Australia is estimated to 700.000.
Mr. Salamouras uses the Australian census of 2006 in support of his view, according to which only 365,147 Australian citizens, declare their Greek origins. From the same census it is evident that the Greeks of Melbourne are approximately 150.000.
“Consequently”, states Mr. Salamouras, “the allegation that Melbourne is ranked 3rd Greek-speaking country in the world, does not correspond to actual facts. According to official data, Melbourne is occupying the 7th position, preceded in order by Athens, Thessaloniki, Piraeus, Patras, Nicosia, Limassol and followed by Sidney.
Perhaps some cities of the US (Chicago and New York) have more citizens of Greek origin, but in Melbourne, most Greeks also speak Greek.
