Presentation of a book on the Cyprus issue in Victoria

A great crowd, amongst which the former UN Secretary General Butros-Butros Gali, attended the presentation of a book by expat academic Michail Michail on the Cyprus confict, entitled “Resolving the Cyprus Conflict. Negotiating History”. The event took place on Monday at the Australian Institute of International Relations in Victoria, under the auspices of the Dialogue Centre of the University of La Trobe. The Minister for Industry, Research and Technology, Mr Kim Carr, officially presented the book and described it as “a literary piece of work that contributes significantly to the better understanding and analysis of the Cyprus issue” .
The writer described different sides of the Cypriot issue and, furthermore, of the book. It is an in depth exploration and analysis of the peace negotiations that have taken place the last 40 years for the resolution of the issue. However, in the book’s pages one can take a wider view of the longstanding conflict, and of the hindrances that any solution faces. The writer also analyses and focuses on the ongoing power struggle and the control of natural resources, in addition to the mutual suspicion and the national identities of the two communities. At the same time, he connects this data to the role that the great powers, including the surrounding ones, have played in all this.
As Hon Carr explained, ‘the book points out that any solution can only be achieved after a thorough understanding of the history of the Cyprus issue.. and touches on the past as well as on the future [of the Cyprus issue]”
As such, the former UN Secretary General Boutros-Boutros Gali described the book as “necessary for all who are associated with or interested in the Cyprus issue”. “The optimum solution for the Cyprus issue goes through Turkey’s incorporation into the EU’, acclaimed Aidin Nourhan, General Consul of Turkey in Melbourne, adding that such a development would contribute to “Greeks returning to Constantinople and to Smyrna” since “the two nations are cousins.”
Mrs Christianna Tzika, Cyprus’ Consul in Australia, answered mr Nourhan saying that Cyprus and Greece are in favour of the incorporation of Turkey into the EU, provided that she accustoms herself to the European ideals and that she respects human rights. In the same line was the response of Greece’s Consul General Mr. Christos Salamanis.
