Greek day schools dodge swine flu

The Greek independent schools of Melbourne have managed to dodge the ‘swine flu’, at least to date.
There are currently no known cases at any of the three Greek day schools in Melbourne.
All three schools have placed an emphasis on keeping students and parents aware of the current situation and have implemented preventative measures to minimise the risk of a swine flu outbreak at the schools.
“There have been no cases in either our primary or secondary school,” St John’s College principal, Helen Symeonakis said, “We are keeping parents informed and following all hygiene procedures that have been presented to us by the Health Department, such as the regular washing of hands.
Parents are naturally concerned but we are working with them to ensure that we act promptly if any cases of swine flue arise.”
Alphington Grammar has also taken steps to manage the risk of an outbreak at the school.
“We have spoken to students about the extreme importance of cleanliness and washing hands thoroughly, and have been fortunate that students and staff have remained well,” explained Alphington Grammar School Development Manager, Judy Fetter.
Principal of Oakleigh Greek Orthodox College, Steve Charisis said that in addition to the instructions provided by the Department of Health and Ageing, his school has taken extra steps by providing antibacterial gels and soaps for students and staff.
“The new advice is that schools will not be shut from now on, so we have been lucky that no students were affected during exam week,” he said.
