During the night all former presidents, committee members, ladies auxiliaries, youth committees, dance groups, soccer committees and soccer teams will be awarded certificates for their participation.

The Pancretan Association of Melbourne – Australia was created from the unification of the two historical organisations from Melbourne. Namely the Rethimnian Association of Melbourne – Australia “ARKADI”, established in 1972, and the Pancretan Brotherhood of Melbourne & Victoria established in 1977.

The aims and objectives of both Associations since their inception almost 40 years ago were to unite under one umbrella the Hellenes of Cretan descent that had arrived as migrants, and to assist them in their settlement period as such. Furthermore they wished to promote, educate and enhance the 2nd and subsequent Generations of Cretan values, ideals and traditions by organising educational, philanthropic, recreational, social and cultural activities.

Special guest musicians during the event will be Sifis Tsourdalakis, Manolis Kaklis and Stelios Papadakis. For tickets please call Aggie Mihelakis on 0439 324 445 or Manuel Starakis on 0411 455 183.

Yiannis Nathanail, 17, from Athens, also the 2010 bronze Jr. European Champion, is the first Greek male water skier to receive such an invitation. Presence of the Greek team in the event is of great and symbolic importance, as the city of Melbourne is the third largest Greek city outside Europe, and Yarra River has been an inspiration for one of the most prominent Modern Greek poets. However, due to the Greek economic crisis and luck of funds, Yiannis’ participation is currently uncertain.

Organized by the Federation of Pontian Associations of Australia and the Pontiaki Estia of Melbourne, the three-day long event aims at promoting and maintaining the Pontian culture in the Antipodes.

The event this year was a gathering of joy and dancing, with attendees developing new contacts and meeting with relatives after many years apart.

The activities commenced on Friday, January 20, with the Registration Event for the enrollment of all participants and the information handout on the Synapandema programme in the hall of the Pontiaki Estia in Brunswick. On the same evening until late at night, the venue hosted the Hellenic Parakath, a traditional opening glenti with Pontian dances and music.

On Saturday, January 21, the Ypapanti Parish reception Centre hosted the Synapandema Ball, during which the vasilopita for the New Year was cut.

On Sunday, the participants enjoyed the rural beauties of Melbourne at Mornington Park with the Hellenic Community’s Panegyri in the afternoon and the Farewell Drinks free admission event later in the evening.

The events were attended by people from all three generations of Pontic Greeks and were created with impressive elements of the Pontic culture still surviving in Australia.

Greek Foreign Minister of Victoria, Nick Kotsiras, who was himself an immigrant from Greece to Australia, initiated the event.

For symbolic reasons, the event was in the dock “Pier station”, which was the designated spot for picking up tens of thousands of immigrants for ten years, including Greeks.

Nick Kotsiras was also one of these Greek migrants that arrived at the dock “Pier station” in 1964, when he was five years old. This little boy from Greece managed to become the first Greek born Minister of Victoria.

Nick Kotsiras was born in Chandrinou, Pylos in 1959. He came to Australia with his parents struggling for a better life and future. He studied pedagogy but politics attracted him, and he managed to become a Minister.

Mr Kotsiras was an adviser to former premier Jeff Kennett before being elected as MP for Bulleen in 1999.

The newspaper ‘The Age’ featured on Sunday Nick Kotsiras, honoring his journey from a migrant to an eminent politician.
