The initiative has already raised more than $70,000 and aims at reaching $100,000 by its completion tomorrow, according to Neos Kosmos.

President of GOCNA John Nicolakis told Neos Kosmos daily that the initiative was unanimously decided on by the members of the Greek Community after he told them of the current situation in the Greek Island.

With the Greek debt crisis further plaguing the people of the country, the fundraiser will enable the Kalymnian Archdiocese to continue its food programme providing humanitarian aid during these harsh times.

People have responded very positively to the call of the Community and have contributed to the fundraising effort with whatever they could.

During the night all former presidents, committee members, ladies auxiliaries, youth committees, dance groups, soccer committees and soccer teams will be awarded certificates for their participation.

The Pancretan Association of Melbourne – Australia was created from the unification of the two historical organisations from Melbourne. Namely the Rethimnian Association of Melbourne – Australia “ARKADI”, established in 1972, and the Pancretan Brotherhood of Melbourne & Victoria established in 1977.

The aims and objectives of both Associations since their inception almost 40 years ago were to unite under one umbrella the Hellenes of Cretan descent that had arrived as migrants, and to assist them in their settlement period as such. Furthermore they wished to promote, educate and enhance the 2nd and subsequent Generations of Cretan values, ideals and traditions by organising educational, philanthropic, recreational, social and cultural activities.

Special guest musicians during the event will be Sifis Tsourdalakis, Manolis Kaklis and Stelios Papadakis. For tickets please call Aggie Mihelakis on 0439 324 445 or Manuel Starakis on 0411 455 183.

He arrived in Melbourne in October, alone. His wife and 12-year-old son will remain in Greece until Modestos is in a position to bring them over. Modestos communicates with his family for 2 hours every day through skype.

In Greece Modestos worked as a concrete boom pump operator in his hometown of Drama, before the contracts ran dry for J&P Avax, one of Greece’s largest construction businesses.

Modestos looked for a month for another job but he couldn’t find one. Before coming to Australia he considered the US and Canada.

After painstaking research on the web in Greece, Modestos flew into Melbourne on a temporary visa. He immediately did the rounds of local colleges offering accredited ‘English as a Second Language’ (ESL) courses and after weighing up the options, chose the Institute of Tertiary and Higher Education Australia (ITHEA).

“The only way I could achieve what I wanted, was first to enroll as a student to improve my English. I didn’t do this just to get the student visa, but because if you want to stay here you must learn English. If you don’t speak English you can do nothing here”, Modestos told ‘Neoskosmos’.

The Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia has called on Greek priest Prokopios Kanavas on Tuesday to give evidence regarding certain allegedly false bits of information he had posted on his Facebook profile about himself.

According to Sunday Mail, Kanavas claimed to have completed a degree in theology and international law at Israel’s Hebrew University of Jerusalem, represented the Patriarchate of Jerusalem at conferences, and restored a monastery at his own expense.

The Israeli University did not confirm the Reverend’s claims of him studying there, while the Patriarchate of Jerusalem has also formally denied the two other claims.

The community is very deep in thought on whether Kanavas can continue his work for the parish after the year-by-year revelations about him.

Kanavas had already been once defrocked in 2008 after the Greek Orthodox patriarchate of Jerusalem had sent a letter with information on his past to the Archdiocese of SA.

After he had become a layperson in 2008, he had joined the Greek army and then another faction of the church before returning to Adelaide and getting ordained again in 2010, reports Sunday Mail.

He was also fired last year by the SA Police because of his lack of “suitability” for the job. The priest has made no comments yet.
