Nick Politis, businessman and chairman of the Sydney Roosters rugby league side, is the wealthiest Greek Australian according to a list compiled by the Australian Financial Review.
The Rich List, which includes Australia’s 200 wealthiest people, features a record 76 billionaires.
Nick Politis, sitting in 55th place, has doubled his fortune within only one year, taking his worth up to AU$1.35 billion ($1.02 billion) from AU$773 million in 2017.
Politis, who made his fortune selling cars, was born on the Greek island of Kythera in 1942. After WWII he was relocated with his family to Athens, before the long journey to Australia.
Kythera-family.net says that the Greek Australian billionaire is a private, almost guarded person. Something of a mystery to the media, he rarely gives interviews or speaks publicly. “I sit back, watch. You learn more that way2, he is quoted as saying.
The site claims that as he has grown older, many have noticed that he has increasingly embraced and engaged with his Kytherian and Greek roots.
He has visited Kythera more often over the past decade, and recently developed three units and a shop on the southern end of the beach at Ayia Pelagia.
