Australia Preschools Encouraged to Offer Greek Language Learning

Applications are now open for Preschools to participate in the Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA) program which engages preschoolers with languages other than English.

The ELLA program is part of the Coalition Government’s efforts to boost language learning backed by $15.7 million in funding.

“The ELLA apps could encourage and ignite interest in long term Greek language learning and culture from a young age. This will also support recent activities by Greek communities in Australia to maintain connections to language and culture through the Speak Greek in March campaign in 2016,” a spokesperson from the Department of Education and Training told Neos Kosmos.

Recent independent reports had shown the ELLA program was successfully engaging children with language learning and raising awareness of other cultures.

ELLA is designed for use by educators who do not have formal language training, with extensive support provided through a suite of resources, including training support and apps for educators and families to assist in the effective delivery of the program.

Neos Kosmos notes that the Australian government is looking to curb the decline in the number of Greek speakers across the country.
