The Melbourne Rebetiko Festival will be taking place later this month from August 20-21st at the Oakleigh Caravan Music Club.
This two-day event will feature music from Smyrna to Pireotiko Rebetika and will showcase many local artists performing works from 1920-1950.
Some of the greats that will be represented at the festival are Kostas Skarvelis, Soteria Bellou, Giorgos Mitsakis, Markos Vamvakaris and Vassilis Tsitsanis.
“The idea was that, since this is going to be the first ever Rebetiko festival, we wanted to celebrate the Melbourne musicians playing rebetiko and showcase what we’ve got,” Kon Karamountzos, one of the concerts founders told neoskosmos.com.
“The 2016 Melbourne Rebetiko Festival will (also) feature newer bands, such as the multi-ethnic Zourouna…Not to mention the opening act, a group of bouzouki students, representing the next generation of Melbourne Rebetiko,” Karamountzos said.
