Seminar at Greek Centre Melbourne: Australia British Greeks’ Labour, Race and Hellenism in 1890s

greek austrilansThere is an open seminar to take place as a part of a lecture series at the Greek Centre in Melbourne titled Australia British Greeks’: labour, race and Hellenism in early Greek Australia, 1890s.

The presentation will tell the story of Greek settlement in Australia and highlight specific events and what roles early Greek community leaders played with colonial, racialized and labor-based politics.

“Greek-Australian consciousness often worked in tandem with the shifting contours of Australian nationhood,” the Greek Centre says on its website of the seminar’s content.

The lecture will be presented by Andonis Piperoglou who has Castellorizian and Cypriot heritage and is a doctoral candidate at La Trobe University.
