Yiannakis lecture, greek women australiaTheir stories are mostly unheard of until now. As unbelievable as it sounds, 78 single and brave young women ventured across the ocean from their Greek villages to start a new life in Australia during the 1960s.

Now a lecture by Dr. John Yiannakis OAM at the Greek Centre in Melbourne will tell their amazing tales of strength and tenacity.

On Thursday, June 16, Dr Yiannakis will present results of the unique 45-year longitudinal study Black Night, White Day: Greece-born Women in Australia. The lecture is an installment of the Greek History and Culture Seminar series offered for sixth consecutive years by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

The lecture will feature interviews with the spouses and family members in Greece of the women as well as a series of interviews over four decades that the women themselves participated in.

Dr. Yiannakis has done much research and lectures about Greek settlement, migration and adaptation in Western Australia.

The lecture will be held at the Greek Centre Mezzanine, 168 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, VIC at 7 pm. Entry is free.
