‘Murals of Athens’ Exhibition Presents Street Art from Greece

Brochure_Page_08The exhibition “Mural of Athens” is being presented at the Greek ambassador residence in Canberra, Australia. The exhibition includes 23 photographs from street art pieces painted across Athens that depict the city’s story over the last six years, since the financial crisis hit Greece.

The exhibition also marks the ambassador’s farewell to Australia, since Haris Dafaranos’ run in Australia has finally come to an end.

“Murals of Athens” was curated by the ambassador’s wife, Eva Dafaranos, who described the exhibition as a “testament of how artistic creativity can deliver in difficult times.” In a unique way the artists behind these modern murals show the effects of the financial crisis and the austerity measures on people’s everyday lives.

In the exhibition brochure she also noted that it is “a generalized expression of disappointment, triggered by the pitiless austerity measures for six years now, has evolved into a peaceful creative artistic movement which reclaims space and transmits a permanent and vivacious series of social messages, together with slogans, wall paintings and graffiti.”
