Australian Play Brings Forbidden Love to 22nd Greek Film Festival

Alex & Eve_05After seven years of sold out shows across Australia, the hit Australian stage play Alex and Eve is set to make its big screen debut on Opening Night October 14, 2015 at The Delphi Bank 22nd Greek Film Festival.

A feel good Australian story exploring dating in a multicultural landscape, the film brings us to Sydney’s inner west, where a relationship blooms of an unwanted nature.

The charmingly handsome Alex, a man of a traditional Greek Orthodox background falls in love with a Lebanese Muslim woman Eve. With parents who will only accept a good Greek girl as their future daughter in-law, the pair can’t stop themselves from falling in love.

Directed by the Australian Centenary Medal honorary Peter Andrikidis, this hilarious romantic comedy is set to warm the hearts of audiences and kick off the festival with a bang. “In the spirit of Greek Comedy Films of the 1960’s, the film is a comic examination of ‘falling in love’ and not following your parent’s expectations,” says Andrikidis.

Demonstrating the multi-ethnicity of Australian culture was a top priority for Peter Andrikidis. “To me it is important to give a voice to all cultures that have migrated to Australia. Australian stories are migrant stories, my grand-parents and my father migrated to Australia in the 1950’s and those customs they had in the ‘old country’ get ‘frozen in time’ over the decades even though those customs have progressed in the country they left” says Andrikids.

“Following such a successful Festival last year, we are excited to be back with a program that is not only rich in history and culture, but also speaks to Australia’s vibrant multicultural community,” says Festival Chair, Nia Karteris. “It is a pleasure to be able to support the talent of our Greek community, which is one of the biggest in the world, whilst celebrating Australia’s cultural diversity”.

The Festival is a must on the calendar of film lovers and Greek Aussies alike, and is a rare opportunity for audiences to see the finest of modern Greek cinema. The Festival will also host a retrospective, which will present important moments in Greek cinematic history including classic, popular movies.

Stay tuned for the full announcement of the exciting bill of films chosen for this year’s program, as well as special guests.

The Greek Film Festival is gearing up to be one of the highlights of the Sydney arts scene, so save the date and prepare to watch wide-eyed the finest films to be produced in Greece.
