Greek Glendi in Oakleigh to Receive 130,000 Dollars Amid Reactions

macedonian-festivalThe Monash Council and State Government have agreed to provide 130,000 dollars for the two-day Oakleigh Greek Glendi, set to take place in November 2015. The announcement came just days after Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris was criticized by Leader readers for sending 38,000 dollars at the free Greek Easter lunch organized in April and was attended by 2000 people.

Klisaris was criticized for favoring the Greek culture festival due to his own roots. Furthermore, the Pan Macedonian Dimitria Festival will also be receiving 8,000 dollars, despite the fact that last year the organizers were told to merge their event with the Greek Glendi, if they wished to receive any funding. Mayor Klisaris stated that the events would not be forced to merge this year.

Meanwhile, other festivals –taking place in Oakleigh- will have to share a total of 87,000 dollars and the Chinese New Year & Lantern Festival will receive 63,000 dollars.

According to the Australian Herald Sun, Graeme Peddle, who is on the Rockin’ the Reserve music festival committee, complained about the “excessive” spending on the Easter lunch and said the amount spent on Greek cultural events seemed “way out of balance.”

However, Glendi organiser Deon Manasis said he was pleased that both government levels had recognized the merits of the two-day festival and didn’t think the allocation was at the expense of other groups, noted the newspaper.
