Greek FinMin Varoufakis Sends Message to Melbourne

varoufakis-auGreek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis described the negotiations between Greece and the three institutions as “tiring” in a video message presented during the solidarity rally held in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Even a ten-year-old can understand that Greece’s huge loan cannot be repaid due to the austerity measures and the fact that the country’s national income has fallen by 25%, he said in his message. “In the end, if you have a sick cow and constantly beat it to produce more milk, all you will accomplish is to weaken it more and not produce any milk,” he added.

The Greek Finance Minister also stated that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the north European partners refuse to accept reality and the policy they demand is disastrous for both Greece and Europe, while adding that negotiations are tough and the government has to face a new type of coup d’état, “not with tanks, as in 1967, but through the banks.”

Furthermore, he noted that during the difficult negotiation period “we have created a national front against the lies, the crisis and the self-inflicted subversion that the austerity has created.”

“We view your support, which has no party affiliations, as a national effort that transcends the boundaries of Greece and bridges Greece with Australia,” he added. At the same time, he sent greetings to the Greek Community of Melbourne from his associates, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, the Cabinet and the Greek Parliament for their solidarity in these difficult times. “I hope to see you very soon in Melbourne,” he concluded.

Varoufakis’ message was presented at a rally organized by the “Let Greece breathe” campaign under the auspices of the Australia-Greece Solidarity Campaign and the Melbourne Trades Hall.
