an aust funeral lemnos 1915On the occasion of the 100th anniversary since Anzac forces arrived on the island of Lemnos, Greece, on March 4, 1915, the Greek Diaspora of Sydney offered a unique artwork by Nikolas Foteinos to the New South Wales State Parliament, in the presence of Australian MPs and Greek community members.

At the initiative of the Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Stavros Kyrimis, a painting inspired by the photo depicting the arrival of Australian nurses in Lemnos in August 1915 was offered to the State Parliament.

In his address, Australian MP Andrew Fraser congratulated Foteinos as well as the Consul General for his initiative. He said that the painting is a significant addition to the Parliament’s collection and it will be presented in a public space during this year’s anniversary.

Liz Kaydos, a member of the “Lemnos 1915” commission, mentioned Albert William Savage, the Anzac forces’ photographer in Lemnos. His priceless heritage collection includes 140 photographs Anzac forces in the Gallipoli battlefield.

Moreover, forty rare photographs depicting residents and everyday life events in Lemnos, taken by Australian soldiers in 1915, when members of the Anzac forces camped on the Greek island during the Gallipoli campaign, will be exhibited at the Thessaloniki Association Hall in Melbourne.
