Food for Thought Network invites you to a special event celebrating International Women’s Day. The topic is Girls and Education.

Distinguished guests to provide the keynote address are: Greek-Australian State Minister for Families and Children and Minister for Youth Affairs Jenny Mikakos and Greek Ambassadrice Eva T. Dafaranos, patron of Food for Thought Network. Minister Mikakos will talk about the challenges of being the first Greek-Australian female Minister and Dafaranos will talk about why she accepted to be the Food for Thought Network patron and the importance of role models in our lives.

 

varvara photo -professionalA panel discussion moderated by Dr Vivianne Nikou, Principal of Alphington Grammar School will follow. “The purpose of the discussion is to share the varied journeys, to inspire, challenge and activate. Food for Thought Network, right from the outset 14 year ago, acts as the link between women of all generations, professions and cultures who share our vision for continuous learning and development,” said Varvara Ioannou, Founder and Chair of Food for Thought Network. “It was natural that for International Women’s Day our focus is on inviting distinguished women to share what helped and hindered their careers and what they can gain from Food for Thought Network.

Panelists include:

Professor Joy Damousi, University of Melbourne. Damousi is Professor of History in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies. She is the author of numerous books. Her world-class research into the history of child refugees in Australia has been recognized by the Australian Research Council (ARC) with an Australian Laureate Fellowship.

Professor Georgina Tsolidis, Ballarat University. Tsolidis has worked in education for over 30 years, including as a secondary school teacher, policy analyst and researcher. She began her academic career in 1993 and is now a professor of education. Her research interests include cultural identification, gender, education and family. She has also researched the Greek Diaspora.

Dr Ann Mitsis, Swinburne University. Mitsis is a first generation Australian born to Greek-Cypriot parents. She always had an interest in education and was encouraged by her parents to pursue her dreams. Mitsis is a Lecturer in Marketing at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne and thoroughly enjoys sharing knowledge with the next generation of business leaders. Her research interests include university teaching best practice, Generation Y and consumer-based brand equity.

Maree Skalistis. State of Victoria representative at The Hague International Model United Nations Conference (Food for Thought Network sponsored student), Skalistis received a score of 99.35 at VCE level and will be studying Arts/Law at Monash University.

The event will take place on March 8, 2015, between 5.30-8pm, at the Wheeler Centre, 176 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.
