Students Recognized for Their Achievements in Greek Language

Dionysios Solomos Awards 2The annual Dionysios Solomos Awards took place on Sunday March 1 at the University of Sydney as part of the 33rd Greek Festival of Sydney. The event was hosted by the University’s Department of Modern Greek and the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW. The awards recognize excellence and promote the study of Greek in Australia.

NSW Higher School Certificate students were recognized for their outstanding achievements in Modern and Classical Greek. Additionally, students of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW Afternoon and Saturday Schools were awarded with the Minister’s Award for their excellence in the Modern Greek language.

The event took place in the beautiful MacLaurin Hall which was filled to capacity with the high-achieving students and their proud families.

It was wonderful to see students so enthusiastically connected with their culture. Student Danae Kefallinou performed a haunting rendition of Greece by Yannis Markopoulos which moved everybody in attendance. Grant Kynaston, who placed first in both Classical Greek Continuers and Extension offered a word of thanks on behalf of the student and an impassioned speech on the significance of the study of the Greek language.

The event was closed by a musical performance by Nikos Sousamidis, Nathan Pylarinos and Panagiotis Psarakis who sang a medley of Greek songs to an appreciative audience.
