Speak Greek in March Kicks Off to a Great Start

The “Speak Greek in March” campaign kicked off to an impressive start on Sunday, March 1 in Australia. The campaign aims to raise awareness among Greek Diaspora members on the issue of Greek language which is slowly losing ground in the country. According to the organizing committee their goal is not for Greek-Australians to speak the language only in March, but always.

The first steps were really encouraging. Facebook was flooded with “We speak Greek” posts, while second and third generation Greek-Australians made a great effort to speak the language during several Diaspora events, in church, as well as in the stadium.

The campaign aims to encourage and provide opportunities for families of Greek origin to start using the Greek language as much as possible under everyday life circumstances: at home, at school, in the market or social gatherings. For example the organizing committee proposed that Greek-Australians should greet each other in Greek, listen to Greek songs, or watch Greek films. Families could speak in Greek amongst themselves during the weekend, while children are encouraged to play Greek games such as “mila” (apples) which resembles dodge ball.

All families and individuals are also encouraged to use their imagination and inspiration to think of other ways they can incorporate the Greek language into their lives thus creating the right conditions for the use of Greek in real communication situations.
