‘Speak Greek in March’ Campaign Launched

speak-greek-in-march“Speak Greek in March” campaign was launched this Saturday on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day in the presence of Consul General of Greece in Melbourne Christina Simantirakis.

Greek diplomats who were present during the event described the initiative as “extremely significant.” Several Greek-Australians spoke during the event presented by Greek-Australian Cultural League of Melbourne president Cathy Alexopoulos, such as Labour MP Steve Dimopoulos, Greek Community president Vasilis Papastergiadis and father Evmenios from the Greek-Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.

Furthermore, the campaign launch was also attended by representatives of Greek Diaspora organizations and educational institutions.

“Speak Greek in March” aims to establish March as the month that Greek Community members and organizations speak Greek, as well as encourage and provide opportunities for Greek origin parents and grandparents to actively contribute in teaching the Greek language to their children and grandchildren. The campaign will also promote the Greek language as one of the oldest and richest languages, which, along with Latin, has contributed to the development of other modern languages.

Several events have been organized to achieve the campaign objectives, such as lectures, book presentations, exhibitions and activities in cooperation with Greek Diaspora and Australian organizations. Meanwhile, Greek teaching schools have been asked to motivate students and parents to create their own activities.

Sakis Zafeiropoulos who proposed the initiative in December 2014 noted that his idea was met with great enthusiasm by the Greek community of Melbourne, but it was also promoted through the power of the Internet which made it known beyond the Australian frontiers, sparking the interest of Greeks across the world.
