Dimitris Basis Lights Up the Greek Festival of Sydney Stage

Dimitris-Basis-Sydne-FestivalOn Saturday February 14 and Sunday February 15, the 33rd Greek Festival of Sydney transformed Darling Harbour into a bustling site, with the two-day annual Greek Fest. Over the two days, visitors were treated to entertainment on two stages.

International performers Dimitris Basis and Zoi Papodopoulou closed the Festival on Sunday evening with a two-hour performance that had the audience abuzz. Basis was thrilled to be performing on the Tumbalong Park Main Stage and expressed a deep appreciation of the hospitality he’d received and the wonderful energy displayed by Sydney’s Greek community. Basis’ set included both modern and traditional music, but it’s his performance of his big hit “Psithyroi Kardias” that had the audience excitedly jumping to their feet. He ended his set proudly waving a Greek flag in his hand while singing Mikis Theodorakis’ spectacular song “Tha Simanoun oi Kambanes.”

His performance was a major highlight of the Festival, filling the crowd with thousands of people. There wasn’t an empty space on site, with dancing bodies as far as the eye could see.
The Festival showcased the very best of Greek culture available in Australia, with food stalls selling souvlakia, loukoumades and other Greek treats. The two stages in Darling Harbour provided entertainment for all with traditional and modern Greek dancing as well as performances by Nasia Konitopoulou, Oxymoron, Arion Choir and Iho Nyx.

As always, there were delightful market stalls along Urban Stream selling unique goods with a truly Grecian feel. The Festival was embraced and attended by an incredibly multicultural crowd who were exposed to a wonderfully Hellenic atmosphere.

Now in its 33rd year, the past weekend has proven once again that Greek culture is integral in the fabric of our city and is appreciated by all its inhabitants.
