Greeks in Australia Support the Greek Gov’t

australian-festivalsThe Greek festivals scheduled to take place over the weekend in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia, will be used by members of the Greek Diaspora as a way to show their support and understanding toward Greece and the situation the country is facing.

In Melbourne, Lonsdale Street Festival will take place on February 14 and 15, and the organizers expect more than 60,000 people to arrive. Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria President Vasilis Papastergiadis noted that apart from entertainment, the festival will be a way for Greeks in Australia to show their support and solidarity toward the Greek government. Furthermore, Lonsdale Street Festival will help in the promotion of the “Speak Greek in March” campaign that was launched by the Greek community to encourage Greeks use their mother tongue.

Furthermore, Greek Community of Sydney President Harris Danalis, who helped in the organization of the Greek Festival taking place this weekend in Darling Harbour, said that the event will help showcase Greek culture but will also be a way to show “our solidarity” toward people in Greece.

The official Australia-Greece Solidarity Campaign in Sydney has invited Greek-Australians to participate in a solidarity rally that will take place on February 16, at Sydney’s Town Hall at 5:30 pm.
