Bulgarian Tennis Player Dimitrov Wins Match Against Baghdatis

Australian Open - Day SevenGreek-Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis who plays for Australia lost to Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov after a long match in the Australian Open championship.

Baghdatis has always been favored by the Greek community of Australia and his latest match was no exception. People had gathered in the stands to cheer him on between points, clapping and chanting for him. The sound of Dimitrov’s fans was drowned out, but the young Bulgarian did not seem to mind.

Dimitrov, who is currently ranked No 10 in the world, beat Baghdatis 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, in a match that lasted three hours and 28 minutes. At the end of the match the Bulgarian tennis player stated that he was expecting the vigorous cheering since Marcos Baghdatis has always been one of Australia’s favorites.

“I like it when the atmosphere is like that. Actually it fills me up with positive thoughts. At the same time, it’s nice to prove them wrong,” he added.

Greek-Cypriot Baghdatis who used to be ranked No 8 in the world has slipped to 78th place over the last years. Now, he aims to start enjoying tennis again and rise to the top.

Somehow in my career, I stopped improving,” he said. “I think I’m not so far, but it will take some time. I don’t expect myself tomorrow to start winning Masters series.”
