Greeks Returning to Darwin Due to Crisis

kalymnosOver the last 3.5 years approximately 3,500 Greek-Australians, mostly Kalymnians, have returned from Greece to Darwin due to the economic crisis, noted Darwin’s Honorary Consul General of Greece, John Anictomatis, who has also served as governor of Northern Territory in Australia.

According to an article that was published in ABC Australia, data concerning the Northern Territory region reveal that many new jobs have been created in the area. However, only a few Australians move north for work, due to the tropical climate, while people from the Greek island of Kalymnos do not appear to be facing the same problem.

Darwin has a large Greek community which was established in the 1950s when postwar migrants left Greece in search for a better future. At least 80% of Darwin’s Greek community consists of former Kalymnos residents. As Greece recovered from the postwar era, many migrants decided to move back to their country, but the financial crisis pushed many of them to return to Australia.

The state government and the municipal council of Kalymnos have come to an agreement which provides for the establishment of a pilot education program aimed at helping skilled craftsmen from Greece to work in Darwin, in jobs that cannot be filled by locals. The agreement has helped so that the ties between Darwin and its sister city in Kalymnos remain strong.

Meanwhile, Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles said that the newly established program was a reasonable solution since a large number of Greeks are active in the area and most of them have a strong presence in the business sector.
