Documentary Follows Greek Musician’s Family in Melbourne

3 Psarogiorgis and his children

A documentary about the family of well-known Greek musician Nikos Xylouris and his brother Antonis Xylouris, mostly known as Psarantonis, is set to premiere in Athens on January 8, 2015.

The documentary, entitled “A Family Affair,” is directed by Greek filmmaker Angeliki Aristomenopoulou and follows Psarantonis, his son Giorgos Xylouris, also known as Psaragiorgis, and Giorgos’ children who are currently studying in Melbourne.

All family members together form the Xylouris Ensemble and perform in concerts across the world, keeping the music tradition of Crete, their birthplace, alive.

For two years, Aristomenopoulou followed the family to rehearsals, studio recordings and concerts, the challenges they face and their attitude towards music and tradition. “The film captures how music is passed on from father to son to grandchildren, in a contemporary Greek-Australian family, brought together by their love of music,” notes the film’s website.

“I want to explore how this unique family relates to the inherited traditions of its birthplace, but also how this uniquely vibrant and original music resonates with an audience across the world today, particularly in the current times of social and economic turbulence,” noted the filmmaker.

Nikos Xylouris was born in 1936 in Crete, Greece. His music has inspired an entire generation of musicians who emerged after the student uprising of 1973 in Athens. He died in 1980.

Antonis Xylouris, born in 1942, is a singer-songwriter and performer of lyra who is known for his special voice timbre and lyra playing style.
