30th Anniversary Since Thessaloniki-Melbourne Twinning

yiannis-boutarisPeople at the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Melbourne were moved when Greek-Jewish Maria Curtis told the story about how she survived the Holocaust, in the presence of Thessaloniki Mayor, Yiannis Boutaris.

The 91-year-old woman was born in Thessaloniki but during the Holocaust lived in a Jewish ghetto from where she escaped. She was saved thanks to a Greek Orthodox priest and his daughters who hid her and protected her. Apart from her sister, Curtis’ whole family was killed by the Nazis.

The woman’s story was presented on the occasion of Mayor Boutaris’ visit in Melbourne for the celebration of the 30th anniversary since the Melbourne-Thessaloniki twinning.

Consul General Christina Simantirakis welcomed Boutaris, stressing that the twinning would not have been realized without the community’s help. She also noted that seeing as Thessaloniki is a beautiful city, she wishes to strengthen the ties between the two sister cities.

In response Yiannis Boutaris stressed that the Greek community of Melbourne is a vibrant and active community that has achieved a lot. At the same time he stressed that officials from both cities should make efforts to strengthen their relations, so that they become real sister cities.

As part of the celebrations, a glenti took place in the central square of Melbourne, where many dancers and artists entertained the audience.
