Australian Government: We Have Jobs, Come!

australiaIn some countries, such as Greece, the deep recession lead to unemployment, while in others there is not enough manpower to staff businesses.

Australia belongs to the second category, as its government is seeking workers from across the world to meet the increasing demand of the national labor market. Under these circumstances, the Australian government is looking for foreign car mechanics, carpenters, builders, childminders, cooks, nurses, managers who will receive 10% lower wages than those provided by the 457 visa for foreign technicians and professionals.

Meanwhile, the Australian government plans to loosen linguistic criteria for the issue of the visa so that foreign workers with a limited knowledge of the English language can qualify for an entry permit.

However, Australian unions claim that the government wants to import cheap labor which will threaten the jobs of native workers.

The assistant of the Immigration Minister, Senator Michaelia Cash, reported that the government does not want to replace Australian workers.

Labor unions believe the government is trying to reduce the Australian workers’ wages and say that the government’s ultimate goal is to impose private employment contracts with lower wages and degraded working conditions.
