Australian City Hall Room Named after Greek Mayor

australiaTheodoros Sidiropoulos took part in the Resistance, he was the first Greek mayor (and alderman) in the historical labor municipality of Collingwood in 1977 and the first Greek Labor Party MP in the state parliament of Victoria.

Even though Sidiropoulos passed away, he is still remembered for being an advocate of human rights, immigrants and the working class, and his actions through the Greek Community of Melbourne.

At the initiative of Greek-Australian Philip Vlahogiannis, alderman at the City Council of Yarra, the municipality decided to name a room of the historic City Hall of Collingwood after Sidiropoulos.

A solemn ceremony was held yesterday, September 2, in the attendance of the deceased’s wife, Popi, his daughter, Anthi, the chairman of the Community, Vasilis Papastergiadis, and others. During the ceremony, Vlahogiannis read a eulogy for Sidiropoulos saying that he changed the history of Collingwood and therefore it was required to find a special way to commemorate this important politician.
