Golden Dawn MPs to Visit Australia

Golden-Dawn-Greek-nationalistsTwo Golden Dawn MPs have been scheduled to visit Australia, according to the far-right party’s spokesman. The two former army officers are going to speak in Melbourne and Sydney in October 2014.

Golden Dawn is the most controversial political party in Greece. It has been criticized in Europe for its neo-Nazi beliefs and the violent actions of its members against immigrants. Furthermore, most of Golden Dawn’s supporters partly blame immigrants for the Greek crisis and the country’s current situation.

Last year, Golden Dawn leader Nikos Michaloliakos was arrested and charged with taking part and leading a criminal organization, after a party member stabbed and killed a left-wing activist and singer in Athens. Several other party members have also been arrested.

The party’s representative in Australia, Ignatius Gavrilidis, said that the two MPs would be visiting the country in order to raise awareness on Golden Dawn among Greek-Australians and also raise funds.

According to Gavrilidis, there are almost 70 Golden Dawn “activists” in Australia and furthermore, based on social media data, the party has thousands of supporters in the country.

Even though some of Golden Dawn’s supporters are afraid to publicly state their beliefs, it appears that the party is popular, especially among the younger Greek-Australians.
