New Agreement Brings Nurses from Greece to Australia

After an agreement with the federal government of Australia, the organization for the support of elder Greeks of Melbourne, Fronditha Care, announced the hiring of 20 nurses from Greece.

“The agreement was signed after two years of persistent efforts,” said Fronditha Care President Mike Zafiropoulos speaking to the Greek program of the radio station SBS.

Zafeiropoulso noted that “no other organization operating in the field of health services or care for the elderly has signed such an agreement” adding that “there are no qualified people of Greek origin interested in working in elderly care in our community.”

Those recruited by Fronditha  will have the opportunity to migrate to Australia for four years and then submit an application for permanent residence.

“The problem of recruiting qualified staff familiar with the Greek language is old. By hiring 20 people every year we are not solving the problem but at least we are improving the situation,” he said, adding that if after the expiry of three years there is still a need for Greek nurses, the agreement will be extended.

Fronditha Care employs 560 people and it is currently providing residential services to 2,000 seniors.
