Dr Michalis Michael is a diaspora Greek teaching at La Trobe University in Melbourne. He is the recipient of  this year’s International Peace Award by the Journalists and Writers Foundation (JWF) of Constantinople.

Dr. Michael is awarded for his work as Director of the Center for Dialogue of La Trobe University, which aims to promote an unofficial, essential dialogue between Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots. Greek and Turkish academics, intellectuals, and journalists participate in this project.

Dr.Michael was selected among 1,179 candidates. The prizes were awarded by the Tanzania Minister of Community Development, Gender, and Children, Sofia Mattayo. The prize is followed by a 36,875 euros (50,000 US dollars) grant.

“The most important thing for us is that our effort to bring down prejudice and break the ice promoting a reunion of Cyprus from a fundamental base is acknowledged. This effort has to confront several reactions and prejudice from politicians and important people from both sides but we insist. Besides, I am a Greek-Cypriot refugee from Kyrenia myself,” Dr. Michael stated during his interview for a Greek newspaper.
