Greek-Australians Face Corruption Inquiry

sinodinosAllegedly, Greek-Australian Michael Photios, top executive of the Liberal Party of the New South Wales, was offered one million dollars in order to ensure that the company Australian Water Holdings (AWH) would reach an agreement with the government of New South Wales.

However, according to his testimony before the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), he had denied the offer but had received 33,000 dollars for his services in AWH.

The Greek Arthur Sinodinos, former assistant treasurer and current Liberal Senator, also testified before the commission. Sinodinos was asked to testify about the activities of the company Australian Water Holdings, where he initially was working as a deputy director, and then as a director, with an annual salary of 200,000 dollars.

ICAC started investigating the activities of AWH, after finding that the company was linked to former Labor powerbroker Eddie Obeid who was accused of corruption.

According to ICAC, AWH had repeatedly donated money to the Liberal Party when Sinodinos were serving as the company’s director and at the same time as a treasurer of the party. The senator claimed that he didn’t know anything about the donations.

It should be noted that Sinodinos isn’t accused of corruption as there is no evidence that he was involved in any illegal activity. However, his political career is in peril. The fact that he “didn’t know” what was happening in the company that he directed raise questions about his ability to be in charge of a ministry.
