The Greeks of Melbourne will be commemorating and celebrating another year of remembrance for Greek Independence Day on March 25, that will be taking place with the standard grand march at the Australian War Memorial on Sunday, March 23.

As stated by the secretary of the organizing committee Kostas Nikolopoulos, “thousands of Greek children will parade this year giving color, pulse and vitality to the event while they give their parents and ancestors the assurance that they will preserve Hellenism in Australia. The Greek flag will wave again this year at the center of Melbourne and the colorful Greek costumes will draw the admiration of the multicultural Australia.”

The Prime Minister of the state of Victoria Dennis Napthine and his representatives, the Republican opposition leader Daniel Andrews and his representatives, Greece’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister responsible for the Greek Diaspora, Akis Gerontopoulos (who arrives in Melbourne on Saturday), the bishop of Dervis Ezekiel and the bishop of Militoupolis Iakovos, the Greek Ambassador in Australia Haralampos Dafaranos, Greek-Australian MPs and senators, Greek men and women as well as mayors of Melbourne will be special guests of the day.
