Peter Yiallouris Passes Away at Age 90

GiallourisA Greek-Australian who was one of the most active members of the Greek Diaspora in the country, passed away yesterday at the age of 90. Peter Yiallouris had served as a leader of the Diaspora for decades in various positions.

He was the founder and longtime president of the Federation of Greek Elderly but also served as President of the Cyprus Community of Melbourne. For his many years of valuable service to the Greek community and other immigrant communities he was honored by the Diaspora, the Australian state and Queen Elizabeth.

Peter Yiallouris took part in the Second World War with the allied forces (in the English army) and he was a prisoner of war.

Specifically, he fought with the military corps of Cypriot volunteers that was created in April 1940.

Under the British administration along with Cypriot officers, he took part in various battles on many fronts in Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

Yiallouris remained in the volunteer corps for six years and 66 days, in the rank of corporal and he was a driver of officials. He retired on September 10, 1946. He was honored for his service with medals and certificates of recognition.
