Greek-Australians Take Over Melbourne Taxis

Melbourne-TaxiTaxis in Melbourne are controlled, to a large extent, by the Greek Diaspora. In order to cope with government reforms in their sector, three large Greek-Australian companies, Ambassador Taxis, Cabways and TaxiLink, have decided to cooperate and create a primary network called Cab It, which owns about 500 taxis and employs 1,500 taxi drivers in Melbourne.

According to the companies’ spokesman, Harry Kattsiabanis, the cars are equipped with the latest Greek technology which will give all customers the option of phoning the taxi driver directly and then tracking his exact location on a map in order to see where he is and the time it will take him to get to their house and, eventually, to their destination.

The three companies have aquired the “taxiplon” application, which differs from other applications because the taxi driver uses a tablet and not a smart phone. “The app will be deployed in the Victorian market initially and later a national launch will follow,” said Kattsiabanis.
