Mixed Marriages Increase Year by Year

Wedding-Day

The institution of marriage seems to have shaken the ranks of the diaspora since it is moving in the same direction as the overall trends of Australian society.

According to the latest Holy Archdiocese of Australia’s data, marriages held in Greek Orthodox churches in Melbourne have dropped by 50 percent within the last decade.

More specifically, about 935 marriages were held in Greek churches of Melbourne in 2002, while the same number dropped to 580 for the year 2012. More than 60 percent of them were mixed marriages, while in 2002 the mixed marriages were less than 50 percent.

People of Greek origin who do not get married to other Greek-Australians, mostly chose people of Italian descent or Anglo-Saxons.
