The Sephamore Greek Festival, known to be the largest cultural festival in Adelaide, will take place this weekend where more than 30,000 people are expected to attend.

The organizer of the festival, Mr. John Douvartzidis, said that the highlight of this year’s festival is the Greek X-Factor’s contestant, Maria Stavropoulou. According to Mr. Douvartzidis, “Maria Stavropoulou is the premier Greek female singer in Australia. We expect that she will attract a massive crowd.” Maria Stavropoulou is a resident of Sydney but she traveled to Greece in 2009 to participate in the song contest.

The festival will also include a range of Greek dance groups performing traditional dances, as well as four live bands.

Mr. Douvartzidis believes that for many people, the main reason for attending will be the delicious Greek food. People are mostly looking forward to gyros, souvlakia, calamari, spanakopita (spinach pie) and Greek sweets like loukoumades (deep-fried dough served with honey).

As Mr. Douvartzidis underlined, “You won’t find better food anywhere. It’s spoken about by everyone.”

Volunteer, Alexandra Vakitsidis, said some people do not have the opportunity to visit Greece or its beautiful islands. In her opinion, this is an opportunity to show those people “what we have in Greece.”

The festival is run by 250 volunteers from the Greek Orthodox Community of Port Adelaide and it constitutes the church’s main fundraiser.
