Greek Diaspora Family Opens Melbourne Star

The Melbourne Star (Melbourne Star Observation Wheel) opened once more on Sunday, December 22, and is expected to be the new tourist attraction of the city.

The wheel opened for the first time five years ago in Melbourne, but due to technical problems was taken out of service.

The state government and municipality of Melbourne expressed their hope that the Observation Wheel will revive the fortunes of the area and attract thousands of visitors to the Docklands, the former Melbourne Port that has been turned into a new “modern and high-tech” area.

The wheel of the Melbourne Star is the fifth largest in the world. At a height of 120 meters (as much as a 40-story building), it has 21 enclosed, air-conditioned glass pods, each of which can carry up to 20 people. Rides last 30 minutes and offer a 360 degree view of Melbourne, and as far as Mount Macedon and the Dandenong Ranges.

The Greek diaspora family of Saul Balnionis, along with his wife Alisa Smarrelli and their sons Lukas, 11 and Nikolas, 8, took an exclusive first spin in the Melbourne Star. At the end of the ride Nikolas said, “Wherever you look, the view of Melbourne is breathtaking.”
