Community of Melbourne Awards Greek Students

img_visa_skilledstudentFor yet another year, the Christmas ceremony of the Greek Community of Melbourne was dedicated to the best students in the afternoon and Saturday schools of Alphington Grammar.

Students, parents, teachers, members, benefactors and friends of the community, as well as members of the staff and the Board of the historical body, attended the event held at the conference hall of the Pan-Messinian Federation, Papaflessas. During the event, students from the community’s schools, and students from other educational institutions, were awarded.

Theodoros Markos pointed out that the community was the first body that operated a school for the teaching of Greek language in Australia. He said that more than 1,000 students attend classes at the community’s school, and talked about the Ancient Greek classes for adults and students that the Greek community launched two years ago.

Vivian Nikou, Director of Alphington Grammar, congratulated the students, saying that she was very proud of their effort, success and dedication in learning the Greek language. She also congratulated their parents and the school’s teachers, saying that the children’s success is always motivated by the parents, the collective effort and dedication of many teachers and professors.

Addressing the awarded students, she said, “May your passion and dedication for the Greek language and culture for which you are awarded tonight follow you in your life and become a  shining example for others.”

The awarded students are:

From Alphington Grammar: Theodora Siganou, Paraskevi Siganou, Dimosthenis Goulas, Simos Yiannourakos Lianidis

From the afternoon/Saturday schools: Stamatia Kallianis, Christos Kounelis, Elena Piakis

From the Department of Greek of the La Trobe University: Tara Zander, Filia Komninos

From Northcote high school: Catherine Pantelidis
