Dialogues About the Future of Greek Diaspora

710-p

La Trobe University in Melbourne organizes, dialogues based on the method of Socrates, about the present and the future of the Greek Diaspora in Australia, and its relationship with Greece.

The university states: “Recent developments in Greece and in the wider Greek area, have once again highlighted the complex and multifaceted presence of Greeks in Australia. Firstly from the perspective of the “gatekeepers” of the western cultural heritage, and secondly as one of the most dynamic immigrant communities of Greeks holding a special place in modern Australia. Except for its European temperament, its Mediterranean Hellenistic and Orthodox roots, the Greek-Australian community has its own unique story to present.

The dialogues are thematic and are based on the Socratic method, consisting of leading and well-informed people, specialists, experts, members who are interested in the topic, and of course the audience. The first dialogue deals with the issue of intergenerational change, and how the Greek community will be in Australia, in 10, 15 or 20 years.

These dialogues do not only offer the opportunity to people of first and second generation to express their opinion, but also come at a critical time for the Greek community, as it passes from the first to the second and third generation. Our aim is therefore to interpret, through this Socratic method, issues, institutions and personalities in order to understand the dynamics, challenges and the mindset that lies behind the Greek-Australian identity.”
