“The Future Ancients” Poetry By Greek Expat Luka Lesson

luka-history-booksGreek-Australian Luka Lesson or Haralampou, as is his real name, presented his first poetry collection entitled “The future Ancients” in Melbourne.

Luka from Brisbane, and child of Greek immigrants has already proven himself as a modern performance poet.  Many of his poems have been composed into Hip-Hop melodies either by Luka himself, or by Hip-Hop band such as Active member. Luka Lesson is a Greek-Australian and a different breed of writer, with an original and yet instantly classic style, touching people from all walks of life. A winner of slams, including the Australian Poetry Slam final & Melbourne Poetry Festival final, and a song writer from way back, Luka spent 2012 touring writers’ festivals and independent venues throughout Australia, Asia, Oceania and North America.

Luka has recently visited Greece and gave some performances. For his visit in Greece, Luka said: “I went to Greece to understand how deeply the economic crisis has affected Greeks, and of course being an immigrant myself, I wanted to express my solidarity to all immigrants in Greece.”

His poetry is a cry of a man that feels like a stranger. “Anywhere I go they call me foreigner,” he says. “In Australia, I am Greek and in Greece they call me Australian. A typical story of an immigrant in other words. I feel like I am in between two countries all the time.

As he mentions, poetry is his “weapon.” “I began writing lyrics in order to overcome all the bad things that were happening to me. Writing was like a cure for me, some kind of redemption. I continued to express myself through poetry when I realized that I can approach and come closer with other people. This is the reason why my lyrics usually are lyrics of protest, some kind of intervention in current affairs. I hope my lyrics encourage people to seek for a social change.”
