South Melbourne’s Odysseas Lekatsas Passes Away

O. LekatsasSouth Melbourne FC, one of the historic soccer clubs of the Greek Diaspora mourns the death of one of its founding members, Odysseas Lekatsas.

Odysseas Lekatsas, member of the historic family of Lekatsas, died some days ago. Lakatsas was one of the founding members of South Melbourne FC, based in South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and considered to be the most successful soccer club in Australia. In 1959, Lekatsas participated in the formation of South Melbourne and for many years he served the team as the club’s manager. From this post, he saw the club winning the division championship in 1962, 1964, and 1965.

Odysseas Lekatsas, was of the same family as Antony Lekatsas who was the first honorary consul of Greece to Australia.

The Lekatsas family along with a small group of Ithakisians founded the Greek Community of Melbourne on the 22nd of August 1897.
