Two Greeks Honored in Australia

Property Icons - Oaks HorizonTwo well known Greeks from Adelaide, Theo Maras and Gerry Karidis, have been honored as the first of South Australia’s Property Icons in a new program launched this year by the Property Council of Australia.

The two Greeks have changed the image of Southern Australia, not only in the cities, but also in the metropolitan area. They have contributed to the industry and the local community.

Mr. Karidis requested the increase in the number of the immigrants in his state. “Adelaide and Perth lost their ground because all the immigrants go to Melbourne. We need to increase the number of the immigrants and at the same time we have to decrease the bureaucracy,” said Mr. Karidis. He also added that when he came to Australia, in 1956, “there were a lot more people living in the city but now it’s like a ghost-town.”

The Karidis Corporation, established in 1975, is now one of SA’s biggest and most dynamic property development companies. Theo Maras’ company the Maras Group, is significant and was founded in 1980. “I never expected something like this, but it’s a great feeling” said Mr. Maras and he added that “there is a tall poppy syndrome. Everyone thinks that property developers make money. Few can understand the risks that we go through to build houses, commercial and industrial property.”
