AHEPA’s 59th National Convention Takes Place

AHEPA AustraliaThe works of the 59th National Convention of AHEPA Australia are complete. The Convention was held at the Sea World Resort on the Gold Coast, Queensland, with participants from around the country and in the presence of many officials such as the Ambassador of Greece Charalambos Dafaranos, the Ambassador of Cyprus Yiannis Iacovou, and the Honorary Consul of Greece in Queensland, Jim Raptis.

Christine Lynch from New South Wales, was elected unanimously as the new president of the organization, replacing Elias Doufas.

As it was stressed at the convention, the members of AHEPA increased by 20% over the last decade, with the majority of the new members being young in age. Also, the organization developed an important charity work, as in the last decade it offered assistance to 450,000 various organizations, especially to the Ark of the World in Greece. In the following months, AHEPA will make philanthropic donations to Cyprus.

The most important contribution of AHEPA, involves the promotion of the Greek culture. This was the main issue of the conference, alongside with the Greek national issues.

In the end, the participants adopted a resolution on the Cyprus issue and among them were the following:

*        They condemn the illegal and continuous occupation of territories of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey, the continuous illegal colonization and the destruction of the religious and cultural heritage in the occupied regions of Cyprus.

*        The call Turkey to respect sovereignty, the territorial integrity and the unity of the Republic of Cyprus.

*        They condemn the Turkish provocations and threats against the Republic of Cyprus, in relation to the exercise of its sovereign rights for the exploration and exploitation of its natural resources within its Exclusive Economic Zone.

*        The participants express their solidarity to the government and the people of Cyprus, in order to overcome the current economic challenges, recognizing the determination of President Anastasiades to achieve a rapid recovery and economic growth, through the policies of his government.  Under these difficult circumstances, the participants unanimously agreed to undertake the initiative to provide financial assistance to the charitable work of the Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus.

*        Furthermore, the members of AHEPA Australia highlight their commitment to keep raising the Cyprus issue, and the need for a fair settlement under the auspices of the United Nations, which will reunite Cyprus and its people.
