Postecoglou to Coach the Socceroos?

PostecogluAngelos “Ange” Postecoglou, coach of A-League club Melbourne Victory, is a lead contender as the new Socceroos coach. Postecoglu considered by many to be Australia’s best coach.

The Australia national association football team has a vacant seat after sacking Holger Osieck. The German coach was dismissed following their 6-0 thumping by France at the Parc des Princes in Paris on Oct 11.

Australia has already qualified for the World Cup, but the team appears not to be ready, and the time given to the new coach for a proper preparation is only 8 months.

Ange Postecoglu is supported by many Australian commentators. Postecoglu has won four championships (two with South Melbourne and two with Brisbane).

The 48-year-old Postecoglu, when he asked after Victory’s scoreless match with Melbourne Heart at Etihad Stadium stated:

”I am driven by one thing, I want to grow the game in this country. That’s all I am interested in; if I am best placed to do that I will do that,” he said adding,”The only thing I would recommend strongly, is that they appoint the best person for the job. I don’t like this ‘let’s go local’. I have never been into tokenism, doing things because it seems right.”  He concluded by saying, “I would not want to think that we would be taking any short cuts with our national team.”

For a review on history, Postecoglou was born in Athens, Greece, and emigrated to Australia at the age of five, growing up in Melbourne, Victoria.
