The Impact of World War II on Greek Immigrants

A Greek professor of the University of Melbourne, conducted research concerning the impact of the second world war on Greeks who emigrated to Australia during and after the war.

Presenting the results of the research in a lecture in the Greek Community of Melbourne regarding the role of the war memories on families of Greek immigrants after 1945, Mrs. Damousi noted that immigration influenced Greeks, who remembered and reminisced of their experiences.

She also referred to specific stories of Greek immigrants, who spoke with her about their participation in the war and their memories, stressing that the war experiences contributed to the formation of their personality and political beliefs. She also noted the effects it had on the upbringing of their children in an environment dominated by such discussions.

Mrs. Damousi observed that some people avoided talking about the war and their experiences, mainly women. This is very interesting, said the professor, because if silence prevailed in the family, this could be due to the psychological traumas caused by the war.

In regards to the children who were told of war stories, deaths, torture and hunger, these stories were engrained in them, making it a part of their Greek nationality and identity, added Mrs Damousi.
